Sanwo-Olu launches new ride-hailing cab, Lagos Ride, to rival Uber, Bolt, others

With 1000 units of brand new Sport Utility Vehicles, Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has launched ‘Lagos Ride’, a new ride-hailing taxi service for Lagosians.

The governor unveiled the scheme on Thursday, March 4, 2021 during the signing of a partnership agreement with CIG Motors Company Limited.

The service, which is expected to take off fully within the next six months, will rival private companies such as Uber, Bolt and Ekocab.

The new launch comes barely a year after the launch of Ekocab, a new player onboarding traditional yellow taxi operators in the city of Lagos.

According to the governor, the service will pilot with a fleet of 1,000 units of brand new (SUVs) which will be given out to operators on instalment.

Speaking further on the development, the governor stated that the service was a social intervention programme initiated with an objective to create jobs and economic opportunities for Lagosians.

He said: “A major attribute of a modern megacity is a world-class transportation system with inter-connected services and mobility choices for the citizens.

“The task of bequeathing a safe, efficient, quick, and modern public transportation system is a key thrust of our administration’s development agenda.

“We are guided by the need for an equitable transportation system with mobility choices for our people.”
